From the Artist - What is Black Art
To me, Black art expresses the story of our people – our joy, our love, and our pain – in various mediums for all people (but especially our people) to see, feel, hear, enjoy, and remember. In a year that took so much from us, yet inspired so many, I wanted my art to show the people of all ages who gave their voices, passion, and pain to make sure the world knew that Black. Lives. Matter. in the middle of a pandemic. This photo was taken during last summer’s Commitment March on the 57th anniversary of the March on Washington at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
About the Artist
I’m a digital director and communications associate by day, and a photographer and creative by night. As a DMV native, my passion lies in sharing the stories of the people in my community and lifting up the culture that makes this area so full of life. I’m inspired daily by my parents – the hardest working people I know. As Ethiopian immigrants, they came to the U.S. with literally nothing but gave me and my sisters the world. Their passion inspires me daily, and their encouragement has allowed me to follow my dreams over and over and over again. Through my art, I share the story of the people, places, and culture of the present – and I hope it inspires, moves, and remains in the minds and heart of those who see it.
